Jack Day laughed as I made the same joke for the fourth time;
‘What are you doing for Christmas, Day?’
‘Staying here,’ he flopped down onto the sofa in his flat,
‘But Tom's going home, so it’ll be pretty lonely if I don’t
invite people ‘round.’
‘You’re right,’ I nodded, flicking through the TV channels.
‘Who’s coming?’
‘Dunno.’
‘What do you mean “dunno”? Christmas is in, like, two days!’
‘No!’ Jack exclaimed, ‘Really?’
I laughed as I looked into his eyes of sheer panic, ‘Yep.’
‘But, but I… I’ve got to invite people!’ He rushed off
into his room for a moment and re-appeared with his mobile. ‘You’re
coming, aren’t you?’
I shrugged and examined my awkwardly painted nails, ‘I’ll
think about it.’
Jack’s face dropped and I giggled again, ‘Of course I’ll
come, stupid.’
He smiled, relieved and went back into his room, only to pop out
again seconds later, ‘This could take a while,’ he said, ‘Could
you run down to the shop and get some supplies?’
‘Sure,’ I answered, knocking the TV off and throwing the
remote so it bounced on the sofa.
‘Thanks. Don’t know what I’d do without you,’ Jack replied
with a wide, cheeky and trademark Jack grin.
Christmas Day
‘Merry Christmas!’ I shouted through Jack’s letterbox.
‘Merry Christmas, silly,’ he sounded back, and then went back
into the living room. He often called me “silly”, it was sort of
a mutual nickname, said with (on my part, at least) love.
‘Hey!’ I exclaimed and heard him laugh loudly.
Slowly he sauntered back to the door and threw open the lock. He
turned the handle and pulled the door open a little.
‘Sorry, we’re not buying today,’ he teased.
‘Fine,’ I said sarcastically. ‘Then I guess you don’t want
this present with the name “Jack” on it?’
His mouth made an ‘O’ and he bowed out of the way to let me
in.
‘That’s more like it,’ I giggled. ‘For you.’ I handed
him the package I had carefully wrapped and looked around the room.
He’d done a good job on the decorating, even if Pikachu wearing
a Santa hat was a little odd…
‘Hey, where is everyone?’
He looked up at me and smiled sheepishly, ‘Um, you are
everyone.’
I shook my head, but couldn't hide the smile. ‘Wait. You mean to
say that we’re completely alone for the rest of Christmas day…?’
He didn’t answer, so I pretended to be angry about it, ‘Day?’
He smirked a little, ‘Yep, just the two of us.’
‘Okay,’ I shrugged, making it obvious that it was nice.
He laughed, pleased. So that was it. We settled into 'Home Alone'
and snacks, occasionally pulling a cracker and telling a joke. It was
dark before we knew it.
‘That went quick,’ I said, as we stood and stretched our legs.
‘Wow, another Christmas almost over,’ Jack replied quietly.
It was so cosy in that flat, with the lights off and at only the
TV on. I wandered to the window. It was still snowing.
‘Doctor Who Christmas Special’s on in a minute.’
‘Yeah,’ I said dreamily, hearing Jack move toward me.
‘Time’s a funny ol’ thing,’ he mused.
‘What do you mean?’
‘It passes so quickly when good things are happening…’
‘Mm,’ I hummed in agreement.
‘Seems like we’re hardly together,’ he chuckled softly.
I looked up at him, knowing what he was saying, but wondering if
he felt it quite the way I did.
‘When I said you were everyone this afternoon,’ he pondered
suddenly, ‘There was a reason for that.’
‘You left it too late to invite anyone else?’
‘No. I didn’t invite anyone else, on purpose.’
‘But you told me that’s what you were doing in your bedroom.’
‘I lied.’
‘What were you doing?’ I asked suspiciously.
He walked off to his room and told me to stay where I was. I did.
Moments later, he came back in with something in his hand.
‘I was making this.’ He held it out and I took it gently. ‘But
before you open it,’ he added, ‘I want to tell you something.’
I nodded and looked directly into his beautiful eyes.
‘You are everyone. You’re everyone and everything to
me. You always have been. When I’m with you, time seems to fly by.
I never get the time to tell you how much you mean to me. I never
tell you how much, I… I… l-love you.’
I just stood, in shock, looking at him.
‘I wanted you alone today. To myself for one special day, so if
this all goes wrong and you never want to see me again, I’ll have
this day to remember you by. I really love you and I know it’s
real.’
I had no control over my stunned body as I turned around, placed
the package on the windowsill, turned back to Jack, stepped forward,
grabbed his collar and crashed my lips to his.
I could tell he hadn’t expected it, but in no time at all, he
was kissing back with as much passion as anyone can. It was the
perfect kiss for me. I was stunning; a true Christmas miracle.
We pulled slowly and reluctantly apart as we heard the Doctor’s
voice fill the room. We smiled at each other and I said softly, ‘I’ll
never forget this Day. I love you too.’
